Like many women, at one point in my life, I was working full time and taking college courses at night. I wrote a paper titled, “The Pink Jungle”, I did not know about glass ceilings then, but I did know that men and women were treated differently socially and monetarily in the workplace. My hero was Katherine Graham of the Washington Post. Perhaps my heros represent where I am at the moment, I was working at a weekly newspaper office when I decided to go back to school. I had no title, but reported to the publisher. When staff photos appeared, under my name was, “Heads up the branch office.” This is not a whine or complaint, I loved my job and learned a lot from my boss.
Later when I became a direct marketer through Watkins, I added May Kay Ash of Mary Kay fame to my hero list. Then I saw the PBS story of Brownie Mae Humphrey who took Tupperware to new heights when she gave Tupperware its party plan. I added Brownie to my list even though her career was a crash and burn; perhaps through no fault of hers. It has been said that she forgot that she was “just a worker”, but I find that unacceptable because it sounds mighty like, “just a secretary.”

These days Oprah has been added to my list. Find out more about this month at The National Women’s History Project
